SEO Case Study - Bidyell.co.uk

Background

BidYell.co.uk is one of the fastest growing website for online auctions in UK. They offer Penny Auctions, Knockout Auctions and Speed Auctions on factory sealed products ranging from Mobile Phones, Digital Cameras, Video Games, Laptops and Computers.

Goal

Online Live Bidding is one of the fastest growing industries in UK and in order to capture a considerable market share in UK (and later on in US) BidYell.co.uk came on board with SEOValley with the need to get much better visibility on the top search engines for their top industry and branded industry keywords and to thus attract more visitors to the website.

 

Challenges

The website had been developed in .NET and it was completely dynamic. As a unique problem with the online bidding websites, there were a lot of expired product auction pages and duplicate product pages with unique URLs and same product descriptions posted on the website for multiple biddings.

In addition to this the website was new and with not many backlinks, had complex page structure, dynamic search engine un-friendly URLs, no keyword rich pages, URLs with 302 temporary redirections and cannonical URLs.

 

Strategy

Once a themed optimization strategy was devised, we first got the more technical search engine unfriendly issues solved. The URL rewriting was strategically done to use the main keywords within the page names. The expired product auction pages were archived. The duplicate product pages were sorted out by adding unique product description for each product pages within the database. On the on-page front additional keyword rich pages were added, news and article section were recommended to increase the number of keyword rich pages within the website. The main category pages were also optimized in terms of the Meta tags, breadcrumb links, and page content.

This was followed by well planned off-page activities including exposing the website on the social media websites for better visibility on the search engines but within our stringent quality guidelines.

 

Accomplishments

After just 4 months, the website started to rank high on the first page of Google for all the core keywords they deemed most important: UK visas, UK immigrant visa, British visas etc. We set a target for 30 keywords to get ranked on the first page of Google and within 3-4 months after SEO implementation out of 30 we managed to get 25 on the first page within 3 months. The improved rankings helped improve the traffic on the website significantly as well.
